Crowns are extremely versatile, repairing broken, worn and damaged teeth, restoring aesthetics and function, or providing support to dental bridges by filling the gaps between the teeth. Meanwhile, crowns are also commonly used to replace discoloured fillings and protect a restored tooth after root canal therapy.

Your appointment with us will begin with a thorough assessment complete with x-rays, after which your dentist can formulate a bespoke plan to create your crown. Before proceeding with treatment, we will always encourage you to ask questions and explore all options, as it’s paramount to us that you feel at ease during each stage of your treatment journey with us.

During the treatment, we prepare your tooth by carefully removing a small amount of tooth tissue, to create an appropriate space for the crown. A digital scan/ impression of your tooth is taken and a shade is selected by you and your dentist, after which the ceramist will craft your crown. A provisional crown is placed, whilst your permanent crown is being constructed.

We will talk you through the properties and advantages of these materials and advise on which best suits your specific requirements. Here is a short summary of the materials we can offer and some of their properties:

Ceramic, Emax and Zirconia: highly aesthetic materials that mimic the appearance of tooth enamel effectively, making them a great option for front teeth.

Porcelain bonded to metal: robust and resistant to cracks and chips, making them a good choice for restoring teeth at the back of the mouth.

Gold: durable material suitable for back teeth and conservative choice of treatment, as less tooth enamel needs to be removed to accommodate crowns made from gold.

The durability of a crown depends on factors such as what it’s made from, where it sits in your mouth and how it’s cared for. We can support you with the maintenance of your new crown, advising you on the types of foods to avoid and how best to brush, to ensure the longevity of your crown and indeed, your other existing teeth through regular examinations.

For the period of time between your initial appointment and fitting appointment, we will fit you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth. This will also allow you to chew with more ease and provide aesthetic appeal, whilst you wait for your crown to be crafted by the ceramist.
