Here at Oatlands Dental Lounge, we offer several different filling materials, such as aesthetic tooth-coloured composites and ceramics.

FAQs

1. Why might I need a filling?

There are several reasons why we might suggest a filling, such as if a tooth has a cavity, or is worn or fractured. During your routine appointments with us, we will carry out a thorough examination of the affected area, to identify to extent of the issue, and inform you of how we will work to repair and restore your tooth.

Patient education is very important to us and plays a vital role in keeping future problems at bay. During your appointment, we may ask you about your diet and lifestyle, so we can establish whether this is contributing to the underlying dental decay. Unfortunately, regularly consuming sugary food and drink triggers the production of acids when the bacteria in your mouth break down this sugar. The more frequently this process is allowed to occur, the more susceptible you become to dental decay, and requiring restoration. Here at Oatlands Dental Lounge, you’re in the hands of experts who can advise and guide you on how to adopt better dietary habits and brushing techniques, so your natural teeth remain healthy and strong.

2. What can I expect when getting a filling?

After an initial examination of your tooth, we can proceed with removing the decayed matter from the tooth. Your dentist will use anaesthetic to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout and carefully clean the affected area to prevent further decay from entering the tooth, and fill it with an appropriate choice of material. Our priorities are to deliver high quality treatment, and to ensure your experience with us is a pleasant one – should you feel discomfort or anxiety at any point during the procedure, we will address this right away.

3. Should I replace my silver fillings?

Generally, silver fillings can exist in the mouth indefinitely, or until they become cracked or worn which can occur gradually over a period of years. If we identify that your filling has sustained a crack or become worn, we may recommend that it be replaced.

4. What are my options for the choice of materials?

Most people will have heard only of white and amalgam (silver fillings) which are the two most commonly-used materials dentists choose. But did you know it’s also possible to have a filling made from Gold, Ceramic and Glass?

Here is a rundown of the filling materials we offer, and their main characteristics:

  • Ceramic: generally crafted from porcelain, known for its durability, and highly resistant to cracks and fissures.
  • Tooth Coloured Composite: subtle choice of filling thanks to their resemblance to your natural tooth shade and bond directly to your tooth which means less preparation time is required.
  • Gold: gold fillings are non-corrosive and their biggest asset is their durability and strength. From an aesthetic point of view, some patients prefer the look of a gold filling to an amalgam filling.

5. What are the benefits of white fillings?

White fillings (also commonly known as composite fillings), are tooth-coloured and blend in well with your existing tooth shade. Unlike amalgam fillings, white fillings are less prone to fracture through thermal stresses like hot and cold food and drink, so not only are they cosmetically appealing, they’re durable too.
