Whilst we will always endeavour to salvage a tooth wherever possible with procedures such as a root canal, this isn’t always achievable.

In some scenarios, tooth extraction is the most sensible course of action to preserve your long term oral and dental health. We’re fortunate to have a highly experienced specialist oral surgeon, Dr Omesh Modgill, working with us at the practice.

Dr. Modgill has been involved in dealing with challenging tooth extraction cases throughout his extensive career. His wealth of hospital experience and use of specialist techniques is hugely beneficial to patients, who are often surprised at just how swift and painless their experience has been. You can be confident that you’re in excellent hands with Dr Modgill.

FAQs

1. Why might I need an extraction?

There are a variety of reasons why a tooth may warrant an extraction, including:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
  • A broken tooth that cannot be repaired through restorative techniques
  • A dental abscess
  • Crowded teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

2. What are the benefits of having a tooth extracted?

Please be assured that if we have suggested a tooth extraction, it is in the interests of your health and wellbeing, having eliminated all other options.

After tooth extraction, any associated pain with the tooth that has been problematic should subside in a matter of days. You will find it easier to brush and floss once this pain is no longer present. Contact our dentists to know more about the Oral Surgery procedure.

3. What happens before a tooth extraction?

Before any extraction takes place, Dr Modgill will thoroughly examine the tooth in question, and assess your general dental health. You will also be asked about your medical background and whether you are taking any regular medication.

We understand that the prospect of an extraction can be daunting, and we will always keep you fully informed at every stage of your visit. We’re also a team of empathetic listeners who genuinely care about your welfare, so please let us know if you’re feeling anxious.

If you’re really struggling with the prospect of having a tooth extracted, we can offer our nervous patients the option of sedation.

4. What can I expect during a tooth extraction?

Extracting a tooth is generally not a time-consuming procedure. We will begin by making sure you are comfortable, and administer the local anaesthetic. Once this takes effect, you will not feel any discomfort. Dr Modgill will diligently remove the affected tooth from its socket and the whole procedure generally should not take longer than an hour.

5. What happens after an extraction?

It’s important to us that you go away knowing how to look after your mouth after an extraction. As well as going through this with you in person, we will give you jargon-free aftercare instructions. This will consolidate your discussions had with Dr Modgill, to ensure a fast and smooth recovery. The extraction site should be fully healed within a matter of weeks.

If you have opted for a dental implant post-extraction, PRGF (plasma rich growth factor) can be used to isolate the proteins that are naturally produced by the body during the healing process, which are then applied towards the end of treatment to kick-start the healing process. This cutting-edge procedure has been used extensively in maxillofacial, cardiac, plastic and reconstructive surgery for many years and has been proven to accelerate the healing process and reduce pain and inflammation.
